The first records I purchased were from ‘Circle in the Square’ which was located on Kentish Town High Street in North London (NW5) where I was raised by my mother.

Circle in the Square- Kentish Town.

Tears for Fears – Everybody Wants To Rule The World

I lived this song when it first came out and still do. I used to play it over and over.

B-side:

I didn’t realise the b-side until recently.

Egyptian Lover – Egypt, Egypt.

Another song I played a lot was Egyptian Lover, purchased on the same day. This was a big Breakdancing track back in the day.

Both records were purchasd on the same day. Check out the b-side of Everybody Wants To Rule The World. How strange…!

Around the same time, I purchased the Street Sounds Electro 5 album from the indoor market at Chapel Street in Islington, London N1.

This album reminds me of when I used to visit family in Highgate and see a some of the Breakdancing group called the EBB’s (Electric Beat Boys).

Also, along with my brother Paul and Milo we used to get the Lino/Vinyl out, with a huge stereo system and compete in Breakdancing and Body-Popping battles outside Milo’s Mum’s shop in Kentish Town. Good fun 🙂

Technics

On my 16th birthday my Dad kindly bought me a set of Technics SL1200 turntables for mixing. I took an interest in this from an old friend Richard D who owned a set of turntables and who’s house I would go to regularly and listen to him cut Breakbeats. This would have been in the late 80’s – the start of the House music scene in London. I remember listening to Sunrise FM and later Fantasy FM. Some of the first tracks I remember were Bingo Bingo & Rich in Paradise.

Some of my other favourite early House classics I’ll list in another post.

To be continued…
